What is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory form of charity in Islam. It is a fundamental pillar of the faith and holds great significance. The word "zakat" literally means purification and growth. It involves giving a portion of one's wealth to benefit those in need and to purify one's soul.

There are different types of zakat in Islam. The most common type is "Zakat al-Mal," which refers to the purification of one's wealth. It is obligatory on individuals who possess a certain amount of wealth that exceeds the nisab (a specific minimum threshold). The general rule is to give 2.5% of one's eligible wealth, including cash, savings, investments, and business assets, to help those less fortunate.

Another type is "Zakat al-Fitr," which is a form of charity given during the month of Ramadan to purify the fast and help those who are in need. It is mandatory for every Muslim, regardless of their wealth, to give a specific amount per person in their family before the Eid prayer.

The importance of giving zakat is emphasized in the Quran and Hadith. In the Quran, Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),

"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves."

This verse highlights the significance of giving wealth generously to support various categories of people in need.

Zakat plays a vital role in fostering social and economic justice, reducing poverty, and establishing a sense of solidarity within the community. It not only helps those who are less fortunate but also purifies the wealth of the giver, reminding them of the transient nature of worldly possessions and the importance of gratitude and compassion. Giving zakat is considered a means of seeking spiritual growth and a way to fulfill one's obligations as a Muslim.
